Review: To All the Boys I’ve Loved

What if all the crushes you ever had found out how you felt about them…all at once?

Sixteen-year-old Lara Jean Song keeps her love letters in a hatbox her mother gave her. They aren’t love letters that anyone else wrote for her; these are ones she’s written. One for every boy she’s ever loved—five in all. When she writes, she pours out her heart and soul and says all the things she would never say in real life, because her letters are for her eyes only. Until the day her secret letters are mailed, and suddenly, Lara Jean’s love life goes from imaginary to out of control.

Holy buckets. It has been a longgggggg time since I was turned off by a book in such a way that I just honestly couldn’t get myself at all invested or even finish it. Don’t get me wrong—the writing style was nice and I WANTED to like it. But, nope. This review will be short because a lot of the content I had issues with would be kind of spoilers, but bear with me.

Overall, the writing was really nice. Genuinely—I liked the style and I WANTED to like the book a lot. But, it just didn’t work. Instead of the book reading as quirky and relatable, the teens just seemed like JERKS. And this wasn’t in an intentional ‘this character will get better’ sort of way. I thought perhaps that was it at first. But, nope. It just seemed mean.

The story seemed really self centered and selfish with the MC. She had no one on her mind except herself. Granted, this could be a great place to have some character development, but her attitude was just seen as quirky and relatable by her peers. No one was calling her out on how selfish and manipulative she was being. It made me cringe! I truly don’t think this character was intended to come across as such, but I just couldn’t stomach how her attitude seemed to be glorified.

1.5 out of 5 stars.
